Another thing is to let that topsoil go through a dry process. That will help control. However in living soil you want to keep your topsoil moist so the microbes are kept alive. If it ever gets really bad removed 3 inches or so of your topsoil and replace with some fresh soil that's clean. Maybe time to amend your living soil at that point. All of these things have helped me with 100% success.

Sticky traps are a must. Yellow for gnats blue for Thrips. Just bear in mind their best use indoors or an enclosed greenhouses so flying birds don't get stuck in them.

I 'm trying to save a 50 year old Hoya, gift from Korea, that I let dry up due to illness this winter. Theres only a few leaves left green with very short green stems . I have them stuck in dirt mixture but do I water with any kind of fertilizers while trying to root.???? Some people use bananas and or peroxide . ????

Here's a practical tip... If you steam fish, use the remaining steam bath water, once cooled to room temp, to use to fertilize your plants.

I like to cut a small piece of weed barrier and put it over the hole. It works great!

That is super interesting about the sphagnum moss propagation growing faster than water. I do think a regular glass of water is a slow method. I propagate cuttings in my aquarium, with the leaf sticking out of the top. That aquarium water is well oxygenated and fertilized, with movement keeping things fresh. I have a grow light over it too. Things root like crazy, very quick and extensive.
